The Science of UFC Knockouts
Analyzing 15 years of UFC data to find when, where, and who delivers the most knockouts.
I've got UFC fight data going back to 2006. How do most fights actually end?
Let me break down all 6,012 fights by finish type.
Unanimous decision is the most common outcome at 2,097 fights (35%). But KO/TKO is right behind at 1,905 (32%) - nearly a third of all UFC fights end with someone getting knocked out or stopped. Submissions account for 20%.
When during the fight do knockouts typically happen?
This is where it gets interesting. The first round is absolutely dominant.
1,065 of the 1,905 knockouts - that's 56% - happen in round 1. By round 2 it drops to 541, and round 3 only sees 264. Championship rounds (4 and 5) combined only account for 35 knockouts total. If you survive the first round, your odds improve dramatically.
Does weight class matter for knockout rates?
Massively. The correlation between weight and knockout rate is almost linear.
Heavyweight has a 53% knockout rate - more than half of all heavyweight fights end in a knockout. Light heavyweight is at 42%. Then it drops steadily down through the weight classes. Women's strawweight is at the bottom with just 8.9%. Physics is undefeated - more mass means more force.
Who are the all-time knockout leaders in UFC history?
Here are the top 15 fighters by career KO/TKO wins in the UFC.
Derrick Lewis leads with 12 knockouts - fitting for a heavyweight. Behind him is a tie at 11: Anderson Silva, Anthony Johnson, Matt Brown, Thiago Santos, and Vitor Belfort. Notice how many of these are heavyweights and light heavyweights. Dustin Poirier at lightweight with 9 KOs is impressive given the lower knockout rates in that division.
Has the knockout rate changed over time? Are fights more or less violent now?
The knockout rate has actually been remarkably stable.
2008 was an outlier at 42.8% - that era had less sophisticated defensive techniques and fewer weight classes. But since 2010, the KO rate has hovered consistently between 28-33%. The sport has evolved with better training, improved defense, and more weight class parity, but the fundamental knockout rate hasn't really changed. About 30% of UFC fights end with someone getting finished on the feet.
