The Many Faces of Meowth
How regional variants transformed one Pokémon into three completely different creatures
How many different versions of Meowth are there? I know there are regional variants.
There are actually four Meowth variants in the games: the original Kanto Meowth (Normal type), Alolan Meowth (Dark type), Galarian Meowth (Steel type), and a Gigantamax form. But here's what's really interesting - they all have the same base stat total of 290, yet they're built completely differently.
Let me show you how each region shaped Meowth's stat profile:
Look at that Galarian Meowth (green). It traded speed for bulk - only 40 Speed compared to 90 for the others. Instead it got higher Attack (65) and Defense (55). The Kanto and Alola variants are nearly identical speedsters.
What happens when they evolve? Do they stay different?
This is where it gets wild. Kanto and Alolan Meowth both evolve into Persian - fast, sleek cats with 115 Speed. But Galarian Meowth doesn't evolve into Persian at all. It evolves into a completely different Pokémon: Perrserker.
Check out the evolved forms:
The Persians (blue and gold) spike toward Speed at 115. Perrserker (green) goes the opposite direction - 110 Attack, 100 Defense, but only 50 Speed. They all have the same 440 base stat total, but they're optimized for completely different battle styles.
So it's basically a choice between speed and power?
Exactly. Here's the tradeoff across the entire Meowth family:
You can see two distinct clusters. The speedsters (top-left) - Kanto and Alolan variants - prioritize moving first in battle. The tanks (bottom-right) - Galarian variants - hit harder and take hits better, but opponents usually attack first.
It's a fundamental design choice. Game Freak took one Pokémon and split it into two completely different competitive archetypes based on region.
