Pokemon Regions Compared
Analyzing power levels, type distributions, and legendary density across all nine Pokemon regions.
I'm curious about the Pokemon regions. How many new Pokemon did each generation introduce?
Let me pull the data on new species introduced per region. I'll order them chronologically from Kanto (Gen 1) through Paldea (Gen 9).
Kanto and Unova are the biggest regions, each introducing over 150 new species. Kalos (Gen 6) is the smallest with just 73 new Pokemon. There's an interesting pattern - the franchise started big, contracted in the middle generations, then grew again.
Which region has the strongest Pokemon on average?
I'll calculate the average Base Stat Total for native Pokemon in each region. BST is the sum of HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed.
Paldea and Alola are tied at 456 average BST - significantly stronger than the original regions. Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn cluster at the bottom around 405-413. Newer generations clearly have power creep built in.
What about legendary Pokemon? Are they evenly distributed?
Not even close. Look at Alola.
Alola has 24 legendary Pokemon - nearly double the next region (Sinnoh with 14). This includes the Ultra Beasts, which technically count as Sub-Legendaries. The original Kanto had just 5: Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Mewtwo, and Mew.
How do the regions differ in type diversity? Do they have signature types?
Great question. Here's a heatmap showing the primary type distribution across all regions.
Clear patterns emerge. Kanto and Hoenn are Water-heavy (28 and 25 respectively). Unova stands out with 13 Dark-types - the most of any region. Kalos introduced Fairy type, explaining their 10 Fairy Pokemon. Normal and Grass are consistently popular across all regions.
What about regional variants? Which region introduced the most?
Regional variants are existing Pokemon that evolved differently in new environments. Let me count the unique Pokemon with regional forms.
It's remarkably balanced. Galar leads with 19 regional variants (including the Galarian legendary birds), Alola has 18 (like Alolan Vulpix and Raichu), and Hisui has 16 (like Hisuian Zorua and Typhlosion). All regional variants keep the same Base Stat Total as the original - they just swap types. Alolan Vulpix went from Fire to Ice, Galarian Ponyta from Fire to Psychic.
