Speed Demons
Who are the fastest Pokémon? Which types dominate the speed meta? And are fast Pokémon really glass cannons?
Who are the fastest Pokémon?
Let me query the database for the top speed stats.
Regieleki is the undisputed speed king at 200 base speed — 20 points faster than anyone else. It's a Sub-Legendary Electric type introduced in Sword/Shield's Crown Tundra DLC.
Deoxys-Speed comes in second at 180, followed by Ninjask at 160. What's interesting is that Ninjask isn't a legendary at all — it's just a Bug/Flying type that evolves from Shedinja. The rest of the top 15 are mostly Mega evolutions and legendaries hovering around 145-150.
Which types are fastest on average?
Looking at average speed across all base forms (excluding alternate forms to avoid bias):
Electric types lead at 85.5 average speed — makes sense thematically. Flying is second at 83, then Dragon at 80.
At the bottom, Rock types average just 54.2 — they're literally weighed down. Steel is second-slowest at 57.9. The designers clearly thought "heavy = slow."
The 31-point gap between Electric and Rock is massive. If you're building a speed-focused team, Electric and Flying types give you the best odds.
Are fast Pokémon glass cannons? Like high speed but low defense?
Great question. Let me plot speed vs defense for all Pokémon with 100+ base speed.
The trend is real but not absolute. Most speedsters cluster in the 60-90 defense range — decent but not tanky.
Regieleki is the poster child for glass cannon: 200 speed but only 50 defense. Pheromosa (151 speed) has just 37 defense. Ninjask has 45.
But there are exceptions. Look at the upper right — some Pokémon manage both high speed and high defense. Cobalion has 129 defense with 108 speed. Zamazenta (base form) has 115 defense with 138 speed.
The tradeoff exists, but it's not a hard rule.
Who are the slowest?
Time to meet the absolute slowpokes — and yes, Slowpoke is ironically NOT the slowest.
Shuckle, Munchlax, and Pyukumuku are all tied at 5 base speed. That's 40 times slower than Regieleki.
Shuckle is famous for this — it has the highest Defense and Special Defense in the game (230 each) but trades it all away for offense and speed. It's basically a rock that occasionally does something.
The funniest part? Slowpoke — the Pokémon literally named after being slow — has 15 speed. That's triple Shuckle's. The name is a lie.
