Every Pokemon Type Has a Personality

Exploring how different Pokemon types specialize in attack, defense, and speed through data analysis.

I have this Pokemon database with stats for over 1000 Pokemon. Which type is the strongest overall?
Let me calculate the average Base Stat Total for each type. BST is the sum of all six stats (HP, Attack, Defense, Sp. Attack, Sp. Defense, Speed) - it's the standard measure of a Pokemon's raw power.
Dragon types dominate with an average BST of 490, followed by Steel at 477 and Psychic at 462. Bug types bring up the rear at 377 - that's a massive 113-point gap between the strongest and weakest types.
Interesting, but raw power isn't everything. Do different types specialize in different stats?
Absolutely - this is where it gets interesting. Let me compare how types distribute their stats across Attack, Special Attack, Defense, and Speed.
The parallel coordinates chart reveals clear specializations. Fighting types peak in Attack but crater in Special Attack. Steel types have the highest Defense of any type but are relatively slow. Flying types are the fastest but have paper-thin defenses. Each type has its own 'stat personality'.
So some types favor physical attacks while others favor special attacks?
Exactly. I can quantify this by calculating the difference between a type's average Attack and Special Attack stats.
Fighting types are the most physical with a +51 bias - they hit hard with fists, not psychic waves. Psychic types are the opposite at -27, relying almost entirely on special attacks. Fire sits exactly at zero - perfectly balanced between physical moves like Flare Blitz and special moves like Flamethrower.
What about speed versus defense? Are there glass cannons and tanks?
Let me plot Speed against Defense to see the tradeoff.
The tradeoff is real. Steel and Rock types cluster in the top-left - high defense, low speed. These are your tanks. Electric and Flying types occupy the bottom-right - fast but fragile. Dragon is the outlier that gets good scores in both, which explains why it's the strongest type overall. Ground is an interesting case: decent defense (87) but the slowest type in the game (61 average speed).
So if I want to build a balanced team, I should think about these type personalities?
Exactly. Don't just look at type matchups - consider stat profiles too. Need a physical wall? Steel or Rock. Need a fast sweeper? Electric or Flying. Need raw firepower? Dragon. Need a special attacker? Psychic or Ghost. Each type brings a different toolkit to your team.
